THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Breaking news.  In honor of National Doughnut Day -- which commemorates Salvation Army volunteers who served soldiers these delicious treats during World War 1 -- Krispy Kreme is giving folks a free doughnut tomorrow, Friday, June 5th!  news link     (Don't say I never did anything for you.)  (Cause this totally counts.)

TOMORROW, TOMORROW, I LOVE YA, TOMORROW

A reviewer wrote that in Disney's sci-fi mystery-adventure Tomorrowland, the "future is so bright you need sunglasses."  story link    I haven't seen the movie but heck, yippee for hope!  Hollywood usually depicts the future in a heartless, depressing, and robotic state.  I like "so bright you need sunglasses," better.

PERFORMING FOR YOUR SUPPER

Performance anxiety anyone?  One has to audition even to be a performer in the New York subway stations.  Dozens and dozens made the first cut and showed up at NYC's Grand Central Terminal, ". . . vying for permission to set up their underground acts for tips.  They appeared before a jury of musicians and transit employees."    news link      New York, New York.  I hear if you make it there you can make it anywhere.

$$ART

It's art baby, and it's priceless!  Well, not totally priceless.  How about we put a price tag on it of over $140 million?  That's what the last auctioned Picasso and Giacometti works went for.   "The past ten years have seen a steady increase in top prices that collectors are willing to pay at auction for singular works by the most sought-after artists."  news link    "The Scream," by Edvard Munch (pictured above), sold in 2012 for around $119 million.   Holy moly, as they say.  Holy moly a lot.
Chew on that this weekend, and let the kid in you dream.

SMOKE SCREENS

Now even burnt pizza is a bad guy!  Is there any end in sight?!  Recently the Iowa state Capital offices were briefly evacuated, with charred pizza crust from the cafeteria being the cause and culprit.  Thankfully, "many [Iowa Legislatures] were not at the Capitol . . ."  news story      (Gee, that's not the government officials I know??  Lol Lol Lol.)    Any-who, don't be fooled.  Where there's smoke, there's not always a fire.

THE KISS HEARD AROUND THE WORLD

You know the kiss.  It was the day the U.S declared victory over Japan, and a sailor in New York City exuberantly laid one on the closest nurse.  What a glimpse of excitement, joy, surrender, and romance it was captured by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.  Check out the link if you need a refresher.  (story link)     Edith Shain, said nurse, passed away a few years ago, but her moment lives on.  She admitted once, that maybe she should have gotten the unknown fella's name and number!

WHY MEMORIAL DAY

To Melanie House, "every day is Memorial Day and we don't need a special day to remember [John], because he's part of our lives every day." (news story)     House's husband John, who is also son James' father, was killed in action in Iraq over 10 years ago.   This Memorial Day we the public honor John House's sacrifice and so many like him and his family.
