A BETTER PLACE

In honor of life's comings and goings.

Principle in the type:  "If we looked at mortality as the whole of existence, then pain, sorrow, failure, and short life would be calamity. But if we look upon life as an eternal thing stretching far into the premortal past and on into the eternal post-death future, then all happenings may be put in proper perspective."    Spencer W. Kimball

ANGELS AMONG US

Is Los Angeles 234 years old or not?   That has become the quibble historians find themselves in.  And not all historians agree on its said original name either; El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles (which means, for you gringos like me, 'the Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels').   No matter.  Angels at any year are a good thing.    story

PUMP UP THE VOLUME

I'm back!  Generally the day after vacation consists of a massive amount of laundry, and a desire to lose five (gloriously earned) pounds.  And this Day-After-Vacation was no different.   Luckily Nike's new ad campaign got me headed right to Zumba class.  Does it inspire you too?

Looking for space to grow?   Cal-Nev-Ari is for sale.   78-year-old "Nancy Kidwell is offering the entirety of her town for just $8 million."   Located about 70 miles south of Las Vegas, her broker says the town is a "blank canvas," complete with water wells, businesses, sewer, utility, and paved roads.   500 acres for the taking.   news

BERNARDINO

Since the Dec. 2nd terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino California, their offices have received hundreds and hundreds of letters and cards ... banners, posters, and emails.    " 'I don't know of any other word to describe it other than amazing,' said Trudy Raymundo, director of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, on Monday."  Commented fellow director Corwin Porter, "It's one of the bright spots that has kept our spirits up a lot through these times - the outpouring of concern and love and support."         news

Principle in the type:  "Service to others deepens and sweetens this life while we are preparing to live in a better world.  It is by serving that we learn how to serve.  When we are engaged in the service of our fellowmen, not only do our deeds assist them, but we put our own problems in a fresher perspective.  When we concern ourselves more with others, there is less time to be concerned with ourselves.     Spencer W. Kimball

PARLEZ-VOUS FRANCAIS?

It's okay if you don't.

Le Mont Saint-Michel is located in Normandy, France.  It has been one of France's most recognizable landmarks since ancient times.   In mid-March, "A supertide turned France's famed Mont Saint-Michel into an island," (news link).   It  was billed as the 'high tide of the century,' but really this does happen about every 18 years.  The landmark's narrow access roadway becomes cut-off from the mainland temporarily, and it is quite the sport to come and see.  This year as many as 10,000 gathered to watch.

Luckily no Man is an island!  Just islands are islands.

Principle in the type:  "I believe that for most of us the best medicine for loneliness is work, service in behalf of others. I do not minimize your problems, but I do not hesitate to say that there are many others whose problems are more serious than are yours. Reach out to serve them, to help them, to encourage them. There are so many boys and girls who fail in school for want of a little personal attention and encouragement. There are so many elderly people who live in misery and loneliness and fear for whom a simple conversation would bring a measure of hope and happiness.”    Spencer W. Kimball
