THE HUMANITY OF IT

The long awaited opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, happened in September.   It is a beautiful building, and likely the last of anything that will be built on the National Mall in Washington.  In a Smithsonian interview, Architect David Adjaye said the "primary spirit behind" his plan was one of "praise."  He envisioned it as "a human posture.  It's the idea that you come from the ground up ... the form of the building suggests a very upward mobility."     story

Principle in the type;  "I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart; I am, I am, I am."     Sylvia Plath

SERMONS

Happy 100th, National Parks!  You don't look a day over ... well, actually, some of you look quite old.  But beautiful!     story

Principle in the type:  Yet is full of charming company, full of God's thoughts, a place of peace and safety amid the most exalted grandeur and eager enthusiastic action, a new song, a lace of beginnings abounding in first lessons of life, mountain-building, eternal, invincible, unbreakable order; with sermons in stones, storms, trees, flowers, and animals brimful of humanity. . . BEACH BOYS

Life is a beach.  For real.  Waves at Lunada Bay in Palos Verdes, California, have called to surfers and the likes for decades.  Allegations exist that a gang of middle-age locals consider the hot spot their territory and harass any who infringe.  "For years, beachgoers and witnesses have accused the Bay Boys . . . of . . . bombarding outsiders," with a string of physical and verbal attacks.     story

Principle in the type:  "The voice that is most effective is the one that is calm, is respectful, acknowledges both sides of the issue, and comes up with a good solution.  It's not the voice that is loudest in volume; it's not the voice that is most critical."    Candace Kay Andersen

WINNING

photo by Disney / ABC Television Group

About the Oscars, I made a couple correct predictions.  (I know stuff.)
Other than that?  I'm kind of on board with the Kevin Hart "Let's not let this negative issue of diversity beat us," speech.  Go ahead.  Be whatever color you are, do your best, share your talents, help society, and keep your head up.  Everybody hang in there.  We got this.        news

Principle in the type:  "There must be purpose. We are here to accomplish something, to bless society with our talents and our learning. There can be fun, yes. But there must be recognition of the fact that life is serious, that the risks are great, but that you can overcome them if you will discipline yourselves . . ."      Gordon B Hinckley

BERNARDINO

Since the Dec. 2nd terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino California, their offices have received hundreds and hundreds of letters and cards ... banners, posters, and emails.    " 'I don't know of any other word to describe it other than amazing,' said Trudy Raymundo, director of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, on Monday."  Commented fellow director Corwin Porter, "It's one of the bright spots that has kept our spirits up a lot through these times - the outpouring of concern and love and support."         news

Principle in the type:  "Service to others deepens and sweetens this life while we are preparing to live in a better world.  It is by serving that we learn how to serve.  When we are engaged in the service of our fellowmen, not only do our deeds assist them, but we put our own problems in a fresher perspective.  When we concern ourselves more with others, there is less time to be concerned with ourselves.     Spencer W. Kimball

BEST FOOT FORWARD

As shows in L.A. go, the Los Angeles Marathon competes with the best!  There are experienced senior citizen runners, foreigners, costumes, and romance, --you know the whole thing!     " . . . Nicolas Pogu re-created an iconic look from the movie “Forrest Gump,” crossing the finish line as Forrest during his cross country run across the U.S., down to the (fake) beard, Bubba Gump shrimp hat and yellow smiley face shirt."   And yes, people yell,  'run Forest, run!'  when you are dressed like that.   Support and camaraderie abounded.   Well done (February 14th) marathoners!     news

HERO'ISH

Actor Jamie Foxx saved a man from a fiery car crash, when near his Los Angeles home "a 32-year-old man . . . hit a ditch" causing his truck "to roll many times over and burst into flames."  Two witnesses of the crash, including Foxx - rushed to pull the man "to safety."    Foxx later told reporters, "I'm not a hero ... but had to do something."  story        But can we count pulling people from burning cars, at least as a good deed?

Principle in the type:  "But I believe in my capacity and in your capacity to do good, to make some contribution to the society of which we are a part, [and] to grow and develop. … I believe in the principle that I can make a difference in this world, be it ever so small.”                       Gordon B. Hinckley
