FINISH LINES

Kenya's Elisha Barno won the men's L.A. Marathon yesterday, with an expert time of 2:11:51.   At less than 3 miles to finish, when lead runner Daniel Limo began to pull ahead Barno told himself 'Let him go.'   However, Barno's heart told him different, and he battled back to win.   " 'There was a lot of pain, but I had to stay patient and I had to keep pushing,' Bruno said."     news

Principle in the type:  "It is when things go hardest, when life becomes most trying, that there is the greatest need for having a fixed goal, for having an air castle that the outside world cannot wreck.  When few comforts come from without, it is all the more necessary to have a fount to draw from within.  And the man or woman who has a star toward which to press cannot be thrown off the course, no matter how the world may try, no matter how far things seem to be wrong.”     B.C. KIDDOS

In a revolutionary surgery, a woman born without a uterus, received her mother's womb and bore a son.  Emelie Ericksson "was told she would never be able to have children."  But amazingly did, and from the same womb that gave her life!   "It's like science fiction. . . . in the future," but "it's about me," says Eriksson.      story

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

It seemed like really, everybody who knew Garry Marshall liked him, as so many nice things have been said.   The writer, director, producer who had a hand in a zillion TV and movie hits - including "Happy Days," "The Odd Couple," "Pretty Woman," and "The Princess Diaries," passed this month at the age of 81.   "Garry once said:   ‘I try to find scripts of stories that kinda celebrate the human condition… let’s talk about the tough world out there and the human spirit overcoming adversity.' "      news

Principle in the type:  "As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate.  Hope is the one thing left to us in a bad time."     E.B. White

Ghostbusters with the Ladies, is out!  Released July 15th.  Don't be scared!   (Remember, the opposite of fear is faith.)

HOT DOG!

Continuing on the stuffing one's face theme, --that hot dog affair spoken of in yesterday's post.   Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, of course!   Held each July 4th, on Coney Island.    This year conquered "by the greatest eater in the history of mankind."  (A title I answer to as well, truth be told.)   Joey Chestnut reinstated himself as king - by eating 70 hot dogs!   news
