BALTIMORE GRAY

BALTIMORE photo by Phil! Gold

Former Raven's linebacker, and NFL star Ray Lewis has put his two cents into the Baltimore mix.  He will not be working the NFL draft this week as planned either, so he can stay in Baltimore.  "I felt that it was more important for me to stay . . . and try to help the city I love. . . . I greatly appreciate ESPN's understanding and flexibility at this late date," said Lewis.   news link

We can't solve all the problems of justice, politics, and a riot from one ex-NFL player's video (below) speech, but his plea is particularly passionate and warrants a listen.

HEALTHY IS A PLACE

For over two years 17 year-old Wynne Lee struggled with depression, a complicated illness.  Suicidal thoughts haunted her, and there seemed to be no place to find relieve.  Last fall through a series of events and efforts, "Wynne's feeling were beginning to shift . . . "   Much better now, Wynne "knows that the depression, and the loneliness may return.  'I've accepted it as a part of who I am,' she said."  news link

FINE TUNED

Sunday a week ago marked the end of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, 2015.  Bands, food, dancing, fighting, and all that go with that sort of stuff makes for a complicated, crowded, and busy affair.  The Indio Police Department had to deal with "the funneling of thousands of fans in and out of the area."  But police spokesman Sgt. Dan Marshall attributed the smooth going in the second week of the festival to the fact that, "we readjust every day to fine-tune things."    news link

THE PELICAN BRIEF

How best to follow up an Earth Day love fest but with a good news moment involving loving creatures of mother earth both the walking and the flocking kind?  Did you get all that?

Enjoy.  And Happy Weekend.

HAPPY EARTH DAY! (YESTERDAY)

Hope all your celebrating was wonderful?!  Or, maybe all you did to commemorate was festively not look directly into the sun, and pickup your doggy's lawn 'deposit' during your neighborhood walk.  That's fine!  "For us everyday is Earth Day," said Chad Nelson, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation (news link).   In that way, I am totally on the same page.  As individuals it is best we truly appreciate what we have here, and treat it respectively!

CASTLELAND

We could research into a thousand details regarding Britain's Highclere Castle, of which the present earl of Carnarvon owns and maintains.  It is old, and it is glorious.  You may know it best as the Downton Abbey location in the PBS hit.  A man's home is his castle (until the queen arrives lol lol lol).  But seriously folks, in Architectural Digest  "Lord Carnarvon sums up his feelings for Highclere Castle, with obvious affection, saying, 'it remains a joy to come back to.' FASTER, FASTER!

Scott Dixon won Sunday's Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix.  Congratulations to him!  A few days earlier reporter Eric Bradley got a test ride, strapped into the back of an IndyCar two-seater driven by Conor Daly.  Heart beats per minute bump way up, a driver may sweat off up to five pounds in a race, and the G-force is tremendous.  "You're sore all over by the end of the race," says Daly.    news link

Sore at the end of the race?   No kidding.  Sometimes this life feels like the most painful obstacle course!

FOUNDATION CRACKS

Forget polar bears, high adventure, and extreme weather -- in Alaska you can watch ice!  Or at least watch it crack.  Or at least wait around, to watch it, get ready to crack.  "Thousands of people each year pay to try to guess the exact date and time the ice will break up on the Tanana River in Nenana, Alaska. . . . A clock is connected by cable to a wooden tripod anchored in the river ice, "that will tip when the ice cracks, stopping a connected clock (news link).

LINCOLNISMS

It has been 150 years since Abraham Lincoln's death.  We remember him, honor him, and still learn from his character and leadership.  In school, "students respond to the president being the 'quintessential American self-made man' and for his 'work holding the country accountable' to its stated ideals . . . (news story)"      Well done, Mr. President.

GAME CHANGER

Lauren Hill, the 19 year-old well-loved basketball player at Mount St. Joseph College, in Cincinnati, died of a brain tumor last Friday, April 10th.  Her cancer was discovered while a senior in high school, but it did not slow her down.  She fought it at the same time she went on to college and her beloved basketball, competing in her first NCAA college basketball game last November.  Friends and students gathered by the hundreds in memorial for her life, as she had that kind of impact on others.  Hill was one of those people that led by example, helping to raise well over a million dollars to go towards pediatric cancer research.  "An assistant coach read one of her essays that ended with:  'Never give up on your dream.  Find something to fight for.  I fight for others.' "   news story

PLEASE HAND ME THE BALL. THANK YOU.

photo by Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, UM

First she was considered for the job, then she was offered the job.  Line judge Sarah Thomas became the first full-time female official, hired by the NFL (along with 8 male officials).  Pretty groundbreaking stuff.

' "Sarah Thomas is the true pioneer," said Mike Pereira, the NFL's former director of officials.  "If a hat and lanyard and a shirt are going into the Hall of Fame in Canton, it ought to be hers." '  news link

It appears she's qualified, experienced, and equally capable of the position, --even good at it.  I'm all for this kind of hiring.

SEEING CLEARLY

I saw this television commercial last year during a football game, on a high def big screen - all the better.
I could watch it a million times, and listen to Denver's song a million more.
Enjoy.  And Happy Weekend!

FOUR DIRECTIONS

I know, I know - it's so hard to believe!  Zayn's out!  (He's the cute little bugger in the middle there.)  One Direction must go a new direction, sans Zayn Malik.  Why did he leave the band (a few weeks ago)?  Because, "I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight," said Malik.   news link

I guess we can't begrudge the guy that.  Rumor has it he may be interested in making his own music.  Guess we can't begrudge the guy that either.  We don't yet know if bad feelings abound, and bridges were burnt on exit.  It's just sometimes a dude's gotta do what a dude's gotta do.  Don't be hate'n.

THE APPLE REPORT

This recent study seemed to suggest the daily apple does not equal less doctor visits.  (Remember, 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away?')  However, once you read the study results more thoroughly it doesn't really confirm a thing!  Obviously health, and doctor visits are a more complex subject than whether we eat an apple each day.  For starters, "the study lacks information on other foods people ate and it isn't rigorous enough to determine whether people who choose to eat apples are healthier or unhealthier than those who don't.  The reason for the doctor visits also isn't included in the study."  news link

Of course I really read the article in the hopes of a 'chocolate is good for you,' revelation.  Void of that exact statement, it clearly wasn't ruled out either.  Hence making the daily candy apple a possibility until further notified, correct?

EASTER BREAK DOWN

I'm old school.  I like to see the kiddos doing the whole Easter eggs things.  Coloring them, finding them, Easter bonnets, baskets.

At Pastor Dan Mendoza's church Easter celebration in the O.C., there is a 20,000 egg hunt, bounce houses, and even 3-D movies, but "the challenge, he [says], is to move beyond the glitz and 'get to the heart of the message.' "  news link

Well wherever you are coming from on the whole Easter subject, it is a lovely message each Spring time:  Renew, and live again.

Principles in the type:  "Almost everywhere we look in nature, there is some provision for renewal. . . . The natural world is a study in the absolute necessity of constant renewal.   As marvelous as this power of renewal is in the world around us, it is even more compelling when we realize that it extends to us as well—individual human beings . . . we can renew and refresh and rejuvenate our spirits here and now in a manner just as miraculous as anything we see in nature. . . . love spring and the possibilities accompanying its sunrises.    Darin Cozzens
